Margaret "Peggie" Hall

Margaret “Peggie” Hall, age 76, of Dayton, passed away Tuesday morning, August 21, 2018, after a brief illness, at Siskin Hospice of Chattanooga. Peggie was born May 20, 1942 in Mobile, AL. She grew up in the Tyner Community of Chattanooga and was raised Episcopalian. She graduated from Tyner High School in 1960 and Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in 1964 with a BS Degree in Home Economics. She retired from a lifelong career (July 1964- Dec. 2000) with the University of TN- Rhea County Extension Service as a 4-H Agent and the Rhea County Home Demonstration Agent. Peggie was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Alexander Keith Chapter in Athens, TN. She joined the chapter in 1993 and served as an officer and committee chairman. She is descended from the Revolutionary ancestor, William Roberson of North Carolina, along with six other documented ancestors. Peggie was a past DAR Tennessee state chairman for ‘American Indians,’ and promoted state activities for public participation. She was the General Chairman for the Landscaping Project Committee for the Nancy Ward gravesite near Benton, TN in Polk County. Peggie organized the 13 DAR Chapters between Chattanooga and Knoxville in 2001, with volunteers to aid in maintaining the grave site, and in conjunction with the TN Park Service- Whitewater Ocoee Division. She was honored at the “Nancy Ward Dedication Day” on March 24, 2018 by attendees including the Association of the Descendants of Nancy Ward, and with Cherokee descendants coming from OK, TX, FL, and TN. She was a prospective member of the Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century, having colonial ancestors. Peggie served on the Trail of Tears Historical Committee. She worked many hours on research in court houses, libraries and personal interviews determining the original roads in Rhea County. Her dedication in the formation of the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park in Birchwood, TN is well known. She dedicated time and money to set up the library and reference room. She participated in all of the park events including The Removal Bike Ride, "Remember the Removal". She organized a welcome group for the riders. She was always the first to volunteer food for any occasion. She was known for her gift of food presentation and decorating. Seeing a need, she assisted in establishing several Rhea County Fire Halls. She was a Tennessee Conservationist. She served on the Boy Scouts Troop 150 Committee. She and Melvin Jr. had two sons who became Eagle Scouts. She was also a member of the UT-Knoxville Retirees Association and the American Home Economics Association. She was a Certified Home Economist. She enjoyed genealogy and history, fishing, gardening, rock hunting, painting and arts & crafts. Her happiest moments were when she was outside listening to the sounds of nature and of flowing water. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Melvin G. Hall, Jr. of Dayton; her two sons, Melvin (Glyn) Hall III of Dayton and James R. (Michele) Hall of Cleveland; her brothers in law and sisters in law Marvin (Ingrid) Hall of Dayton, Judy Hall of Elba, AL, Retta (Randy) Ford of Dayton, and Dale (Penny) Hall of Glen Burnie, MD; 13 nieces and nephews, and 7 great-nieces and great-nephews. She leaves behind a dear pet cat named Flash. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis S. Roberson and Catharine Roberson and brother in law, William “Bill” Hall. The family is being cared for by the Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton where they will receive family and friends Friday after 5:00 p.m. Funeral services for Peggie will be held Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev.
