Mrs. Geraldine Shofner Langley

Geraldine “Geri” Shofner Langley, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many, passed this life, being 92 years old, on July 12, 2012. She was born May 27, 1920 to Gerald LeRoy and Maude (Foust) Shofner, living all her life in Dayton. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, then the First United Methodist Church of Dayton. Geri was married to her high school sweetheart, the late William Glenn Langley of Dayton and is survived by a daughter Rebecca (Virgil) Hollingsworth of Dayton and a son, William Glenn (Judy) Langley, Jr., of Palm Beach, FL, grandchildren Aimee (P.T.) Papson of Chattanooga, Glenn (Jenny) Hollingsworth of Blacksburg, VA, Debbie (Brett) Butterman and Teresa (Robert) Kolinek of Palm Beach, FL, eight great-grandchildren, a sister Glena (Jim) Esty Sikes of Hohenwald, TN, a brother, Jerry (Nadine) Shofner of Hixson, TN, and many nieces and nephews. Not forgetting her beloved little doggie “Lucy” and her devoted caregivers, DJ, Sandra, Joan, Fran and Amie. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Bailey of Oak Ridge, TN. Geri graduated valedictorian from Rhea Central High School and was a Daughter of the Revolution (DAR) State Representative. She graduated from the Abel School of Business in Dayton and attended hospital management classes at the University of Tennessee. While working for the City of Dayton as secretary, Geri named many of the streets in Dayton’s Mt. View subdivision and in the city. She retired as accountant/comptroller at the Rhea County Medical Center after 38 years, where she earned several hospital financial management awards and had been a member of the American Association of Women Accountants. After her retirement, she was associated with Polaris Travel of Oak Ridge and Dayton in outside sales. She was a volunteer with the 1996 Olympics at the Ocoee White Water games. Geri enjoyed her worldwide travels; north to Alaska, south to Panama Canal, east to Europe and west to China and Russia with her dear friends and traveling companions, Jack Scott of London, England, Lea Hood of Chattanooga and Ernestine Simpson of Spring City, TN. Geri’s family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Vanderwall Funeral Home, 164 Maple Street, Dayton, TN 37321. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:00 am, and will proceed to the Buttram Cemetery in North Dayton for her graveside service which will be officiated by Rev. John Anderson.
